LinkedIn Messaging Tips & Tricks

Ever since I have been posting about my interview experiences, you always asked me about how did I approach the recruiters. Here’s my answer.

• Don’t hesitate before messaging. The worst that can happen is that the person won’t reply, which is anyway happening when you don’t text.
• Do NOT just write Hi/Hello. I can’t focus enough on this point, but LinkedIn isn’t WhatsApp. Even on WhatsApp you introduce yourself when you text a stranger, so why just a Hi/Hello on LinkedIn.
• Avoid using Ma’am/Sir/Di/Bhaiya. Some people don’t mind that, but most people don’t like it. Use their names instead, or just don’t use anything.
• Try to write everything in one text. You can refer my previous blog on Cold message template. You might think, “I don’t know the person, nor does the person know me" or “How can I ask for help in the first conversation, let’s talk first", etc. etc. However, no one has time to talk to anyone. Whoever is on LinkedIn they know that it’s a platform to network and help others, so asking for help in the very first conversation isn’t anything wrong.
• Be patient with replies. The person you are texting must be receiving many messages in a day. Different people have different frequencies of using LinkedIn. Some people use it once a day, some once a week and some once a month. So, text multiple people and don’t spam them on receiving no replies.
• Try to cut the conversation as short as possible, on point.
• Be professional. Avoid slangs, or “u, wassup, hey" etc.
• Pro tip : Go through the profile of the person you are texting nicely. Understand what the other party is interested in, and frame your message in such a way that the other party automatically gets interested in replying back to you. Remember that the receiver hardly views your profile. For eg. you see a person winning multiple hackathons, and you also participate in hackathons, so try to mention it in your message. Or you see that the recruiter is very much into community building, try to highlight your contributions in the community work.
